Today marks the day for the third progress report and not a lot of progress has been made so far this few weeks. My partners and I have been busy working on college applications and haven´t been able to talk much about the project itself. We still have the month of March we would like to hold the event, but we need to get in touch with our high school faculty to discuss the dates we have agreed on. I believe I will try and email the Mr. Lord again today to try and set up another meeting with him. It has been hard however as all my partners have busy schedules. Even with these difficulties the project is still in full effect and we should have the whole event planned soon. Once we get over these facility difficulties the next set will be the marketing of the event. I still plan to find sponsors for food and potentially a face painter for the event. Personally I think we still have time, I don´t really think we are pressed for time as of right now.
Instead, it is up to my partners and I to find a date when to use the facilities. We have come to an agreement we should have the event take place sometime in March of 2018. With us having ample time to promote the "Sage Creek loves Kids" extravaganza. I have discussed with my mentors and decided that soliciting at all the elementary and middle schools will be the most efficient way to spread the word. I will personally go to every school or if it is possible, I will attempt to attend a school board meeting to where I can present my genius project to every school principal or person of interest that is affiliated with their school in hopes I can convince them to allow me to place flyers in their schools. On the flyer will contain the basic information of the event: Location, Time, Description of Event etc. The flyer will also have the link to both my website and a google form parents can fill out if they are interested in signing for my event. The google form will simply ask for the child's full name, parents full name, and the parent's email. I will also include a comment section for anything the parents would like us to know such as if the child is recovering an injury. This way we are fully aware of who will need more attention than others. Once we will cap out around 250-300 kids per say, I will make a giant spreadsheet, creating a roster for the event and will email all the participants important dates and details.
Hey guys it's CJ again. I have changed my project ONCE AGAIN, but I believe this project is the one. I have decided to link up and have a partnership with all of the following: Conner Tabone, Makenna Manti, Jake Mcallister, Chloe Mcgovern, Bailee Brenan, and Darius Ellis. We all have one thing in common, we want to train and help out little kids with the sport of their choice. However what if your child doesn't know what they want to do yet? No fear, Sage Sports Day is here! With this new partnership we are all planning on having a massive sports day held all by Sage Creek students. The sports day will include hockey, soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball. There will also be a lunch break and I am looking into mini games we can do to keep the fun going. This is where I am with my genius project. Yes I took some steps back, but I believe it was for the best. With the amazing team I have assembled, I can only see greatness coming from our project and I can't wait to hold the event. We still have some major issues that need to be addressed however. The two most glaring being that we don't know when we will hold the event and how we are going to promote the event. We are planning on talking to our administration on dates and I am going to talk to my mentors on how I can get the word out. Other than that I think we are good to go.
Hey guys! Just a quick update... This week I was introduced to an animation creator named, "Powtoon" and I absolutely love it. This animation creator will be the slide show I will now use to sell my genius project pitch to my peers in class. By having this tool in my back pocket, this will now allow me to not worry about the presentation and just focus on writing my pitch, which I already have started. I believe I'm making solid progress towards my goal of completing my genius project very fluently. My mentors and I are already in conversation of when the event when happening and we also agreed where the event can take place at the Calavera Recreational Center in Carlsbad. It's about a 2-minute drive from my high school. My timeline is looking clear as day and I am now in the position to figuratively walk towards the finish line. I still need to clean up some ends such as finishing up my website and marketing my event but for the most part, I like where I am in my project. My projected end date is sometime in August or September as that is when school will start up again and I have the whole summer to get everything ready. As far as my pitch goes, I will be piggy-backing on the powtoon I have already created. Using the powtoon as a foundation, I need to add slides and add my actual pitch to the animation. I also need to finish the script, but this is all small things that aren't too big of a worry for me. Yesterday I finished up a "Problem Solving Simulation" in class which had me asking questions of the difficulties I could potentially have with my genius project. The simulation at first gave me different situations to solve such as planning a child's birthday party with specific requirements and constraints. The simulation was then applied to my genius project and I was tasked with researching potential problems that could arise. After the simulation was completed, I considered the questions that follow: 1) What if there isn't a big turnout of children? 2) What if can't find sufficient help for the camp? 3) What if I can't find a date that I can use Calavera for? 4) Do I have to fund raise for any costs? These questions are the major problems that could arise but they all can be easily fixed. To ensure a big turnout of children, I'm going to talk to my mentors about them spreading the word of my camp to their contacts as well as me contact local schools in my area. To ensure I receive enough help for the camp, I am considering asking a few of my buddies to aid me in training the children. The date of the camp shouldn't be problem at all as I am planning a meeting with my mentors to talk over when the gym is open. Lastly, I believe I can do this cost-free. The only expense I can think of is having to rent the gym out for a few hours. The next time I talk to my mentors, I will also bring up these questions to see what they have in mind as well. As of right now I am entirely confident my project can be completed.
Hey guys, CJ here! Looks like I have finally came off cloud nine and back down to reality. Today marks the day that I formally asked two individuals to be my mentor in my quest to complete my genius project. I know them very well as they are my bosses ironically. I chose them because they obtain the perfect set of skills to aid me tremendously. I conversed with them about idea of the tournament to see what they thought about it and they had some demoralizing but, very helpful information in regards to my tournament. We came to the conclusion that I don't have the time and resources to put on the tournament at my deadline of the beginning of the next school year. However there's no need to fear as my peers and I have found another idea that has a significant better chance of being a success. sticking with the same topic of children and basketball, I have decided that I will train the children instead of having a giant tournament. Don't get me wrong, I still strongly love the idea of the tournament, but it's just a little out of my grasp as a junior in high school. I don't have the networking and funding to pull it off. The name of it is in still in the works, but for now I chosen to call it "Passion for the Game". I believe it's a good starter name for the program as it's bold enough to entice children to com out and want to get better and most importantly have fun. I have come to find out that even though I'm not able to do my original idea, it was merely a stepping stone in the adventure of genius project.
On the 18th of April I was lucky enough to be apart of the Genius Project Forum that took place at my high school. The senior class were tasked on giving their TED talks to us in groups for 3 reasons. The first was to see who should be nominated to compete for scholarship money for certain universities. The second was to share their ideas with the junior class to inspire us into doing something great for our communities. Lastly, the forum was for seniors to educate the juniors in what our projects should look like, what they shouldn't look like, and how to manage your time wisely so you don't have to rush and cram a month before it is due.
My biggest take away from the forum has to be time management and passion/inspiration for my project. I have a greater understanding that I need to complete my project more than ever before and that is due to a senior named Branden Korf. I was fortunate to listen to his presentation and the ironic thing is that he didn't do anything. He originally wanted to write poetry, but he found that he wasn't passionate about it, so he ended up procrastinating so much that he didn't have time to do a different project. However, by not doing anything he was able to find his true genius project. He inspired me by explaining to everyone, if you aren't interested and passionate about it then you are wasting your time. I believe in his speech he asked us, "If you don't know what you want to do in life, then are you truly passionate about anything?" This made me really question how much I really wanted to make my genius project from a dream to a reality. What I learned is that you need to find something that screams out to you. I don't mean that in a harmful way, what I mean is you need to find your external outlet from the world, whether it be playing a certain game to meditating. Take me for example, there are many pressures placed on a teenager. We have to find a way to balance school, work, and sports or other hobbies. Not to mention on top of that you need to find time to see your friends or make time for your girlfriend/boyfriend. All this builds up stress and tension on your body and you need something to help release that and mine is basketball. The minute I hit the court and the ball starts rolling, it's like time freezes, and you can just lose yourself. This is my passion. Basketball is such a great sport, it builds athleticism, it brings people together, it builds competitiveness, and I want to share it with my community, giving me the fiery desire to complete my genius project. Now it's my turn to ask you, what are you really passionate about? If don't know, don't get discouraged... keep looking. Everyone has something special inside them, it just might take a little longer for some to find it and if you know what you want to do in life then follow it, nurture it, strive to get better at what ever you want to do and most importantly, don't EVER let anyone tell you can't do something. Who says you can't be a professional athlete? Who says you can't make a living playing chess? It's up to you to decide whether you shoot for the stars, or end up following the person that flies everyone to mars. Hey guys! CJ here and this is everything you would want to know about my genius project. So for my genius project I decided to make a giant 3 on 3 basketball tournament for the middle schools near Carlsbad. I got my inspiration from where I work and my passion for basketball of course. The City of Carlsbad hosts an annual event where all the middle schools get together and go head-to-head against each other. I absolutely love this idea and wanted to try and make an impact on the children at local schools so I sort of piggy backed on my job's event. I decided to call it the "Carlsbad Rush Tournament" and I found a picture (shown below) that I feel would entice children to want to come hang out and play some basketball. I called it "rush" because this will not be a typical 5v5 exhibition. I plan to go into each middle school individually and have them play against their friends and classmates 3v3 style while playing in a positive environment. Hence, the reason it is called "rush", is because the kids would be constantly playing as the games would be shorter in duration. Along with the games, spectators won't be left out as they will be encourage to cheer their children on. On top of going to all the middle schools, I also want to try and reserve my high school's gymnasium and hand pick a few kids from each school to play in a giant "all-star" game. The goal is to expose the kids to a high school basketball game environment before they get there and I feel they would have a blast playing in a giant gym. I plan to fundraise enough money or find sponsors to where I could have pizza, refreshments, and music but I know that this whole thing will take an EXTREME amount of work but I'm up for the task.
